Overview

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), also known as corticotropin, is a 39-amino acid peptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It is a cleavage product of the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) precursor and serves as a key component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. ACTH stimulates corticosteroid secretion from the adrenal cortex through the melanocortin-2 receptor (MC2R/ACTH-R) in response to biological stress.
