Overview
Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), also known as B-type natriuretic peptide, is a hormone primarily released by cardiomyocytes in the heart ventricles in response to ventricular volume expansion and stretching. Initially isolated from porcine brain tissue, it was later found to predominantly originate from the heart. BNP belongs to the natriuretic peptide family alongside ANP and CNP, sharing a 17-amino acid ring structure with a disulfide bridge between two cysteine residues.
