Overview

Ceratotoxins are short linear cationic antibacterial peptides (29 amino acids) produced in the female reproductive accessory glands of the medfly Ceratitis capitata. Their expression is regulated by juvenile hormone and increased upon mating, independent of bacterial infection. Three distinct ceratotoxins (A, B, and C) have been purified, differing by only two amino acids at positions 6 and 19.
