Overview
Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), also known as corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), is a 41-amino-acid peptide hormone that serves as the central regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Encoded by the CRH gene in humans, CRF is secreted by the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus in response to stress, stimulating the pituitary synthesis and release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
