Defensin

Overview

Defensins are a family of antimicrobial peptides that constitute an essential component of the innate immune system across plants, fungi, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Typically 18–45 amino acids in length with three or four conserved disulfide bonds, defensins function as host defense peptides with both direct antimicrobial activity and immune signaling capabilities. Vertebrate β-defensins are cationic peptides expressed on epithelial surfaces that interact with negatively charged microbial membranes.
