Eglin C

Overview

Eglin C is a potent serine proteinase inhibitor originally isolated from the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. This 8.1 kDa protein consists of a single polypeptide chain of 70 amino acid residues and acts as an elastase/cathepsin G inhibitor. Despite the absence of disulfide bridges, its three-dimensional structure is remarkably stable, and it is now produced by recombinant genetic engineering.
