Overview

Ghrelin is a peptide hormone primarily secreted by enteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract, often referred to as the "hunger hormone" due to its potent orexigenic effects. Circulating ghrelin levels rise before meals and fall after food intake, acting on hypothalamic neurons to stimulate appetite and promote energy storage. Beyond appetite regulation, ghrelin also enhances gastric motility, stimulates gastric acid secretion, and influences glucose metabolism and cardiovascular function.
