Overview
Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), also known as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, is a member of the secretin family of hormones. Although it was originally named for its weak inhibition of gastric acid secretion, GIP's primary physiological role is as an incretin hormone — it stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells following nutrient ingestion. Together with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), GIP is a key regulator of postprandial insulin release and metabolic homeostasis.
