Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a 30- or 31-amino acid peptide hormone derived from tissue-specific post-translational processing of proglucagon. Its active forms — GLP-1(7-36) amide and GLP-1(7-37) — enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppress glucagon release, slow gastric emptying, and promote satiety. Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2), co-secreted with GLP-1, is a 33-amino acid peptide specialized in regulating intestinal growth, barrier function, and nutrient absorption.
