Melittin
Overview
Melittin is a 26-amino-acid amphipathic peptide that constitutes the main component and major pain-producing substance of honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom. It possesses potent hemolytic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties and is widely used as a model compound for studying membrane-active peptides and pore-forming mechanisms. Melittin is also over-expressed in honeybees infected with various pathogens, indicating a role in innate immunity.
