Overview
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), also known as matrixins, are calcium-dependent zinc-containing endopeptidases belonging to the metzincin superfamily. They share a highly conserved catalytic motif featuring three histidine residues that coordinate zinc and a conserved methionine beneath the active site. MMPs degrade extracellular matrix components and play critical roles in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and disease processes including cancer metastasis.
