Overview
Melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH) are a family of peptide hormones derived from pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), including α-MSH, β-MSH, and γ-MSH. α-MSH is a 13-amino-acid neuropeptide in the melanocortin family with potent anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antimicrobial properties. MSH peptides regulate skin pigmentation by increasing melanin production in melanocytes and serve as endogenous melanocortin receptor agonists.
