Neuropeptides

Overview

Neuropeptides are chemical messengers synthesized and released by neurons, typically 3–40 amino acids in length, that function as neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. They are synthesized from large precursor proteins that undergo proteolytic cleavage and post-translational processing before packaging into dense core vesicles. Neuropeptides can co-release with classical neurotransmitters, providing multifaceted modulation of neural activity through G-protein-coupled receptor signaling.
