NPY (Neuropeptide Y)
Overview
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36-amino-acid neuropeptide abundantly expressed in both the central and peripheral nervous systems, where it is co-secreted with neurotransmitters including GABA and glutamate. NPY is the most potent orexigenic peptide known, powerfully stimulating food intake and energy storage. It also functions as a strong vasoconstrictor and modulates diverse processes including epileptic seizure control, blood pressure regulation, pain perception, anxiety, and circadian rhythms.
Key Features
