Overview
Opioid peptides are released by post-translational proteolytic cleavage of precursor proteins including proenkephalin, prodynorphin, and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). These peptides bind to μ, δ, and κ opioid receptors in the brain and peripheral tissues, acting as neuromodulators that alter the electrical properties of target neurons and influence neurotransmitter release.
