Overview

Opioid peptides are released by post-translational proteolytic cleavage of precursor proteins including proenkephalin, prodynorphin, and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). These peptides bind to μ, δ, and κ opioid receptors in the brain and peripheral tissues, acting as neuromodulators that alter the electrical properties of target neurons and influence neurotransmitter release. Though their effects vary, they all share functional resemblance to opiate alkaloids.
